The first major plan of RTEF is to develop the “Janata Primary School” a government school run by the local community in Siraha District in eastern Nepal as a model community school. This involves a number of smaller projects. The project being worked out at present is the building of the boundary wall around the school complex. The school abounds in 5 katthas (about 1690 square meters) of flat land. It requires approximately 400 meter of boundary wall. The cost of the brick wall is estimated to be around Rs 2,50,000 (i.e. US $ 3,500).
In the absence of the boundary wall, the school has not been able to protect its premises from the unattended cattle, which are left by the villagers to graze around, and other intruders. That is the reason that children are always under the risk. Similarly, once there is a boundary wall, it is possible to develop a small garden in front of the school, and protect the playground of the children and their toilets and water pumps. At present, there is no vegetation around the school, and this has affected the children’s quality of life. A boundary wall will certainly add to the quality of the school life. Any amount of contribution to the RTEF starting from $1 or contribution in kind (books, stationery, furniture, sports goods) would be most appreciated.
In the 2004, RTEF constructed two classrooms for schoolchildren of the Janata Primary School. These rooms of 9′ X 18′ size now accommodate class 4 and 5. The students of these classes used to be taught in open in the absence of class rooms for them. The RTEF therefore planned to build two more classrooms so that all students can study in a proper environment of a classroom. In this regard, the RTEF was assisted in the form of cash contribution from interested individuals or organizations to build these two classrooms for the children. The construction of these classrooms of local quality cost around Nepalese Rupees 2,16,000 (US $ 3000). A teacher has also been hired by RTEF to provide extra tuition to the students whose English and mathematics are weak. They all have been possible with the help of our donors, whose names and photographs appear hereunder.
The school has a total of 139 students and children are enrolled from grades 1-5. 20% of the students come from the most disadvantaged community of the “Dalits” or “Untouchables”, a very underprivileged and socially discriminated community in Nepal. Three government teachers currently teach in the school. They are, as mentioned above, are supplemented by the fourth teacher hired by RTEF. The RTEF therefore seeks humble contribution in cash and kind to build the boundary walls for the school. Should you require more information about the RTEF and its activities, we would be most happy to provide you with the information.
